Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Germany conducted a new research on Delta and Omicron variants of the COVID-19 virus. For the research in which the mortality rates of Delta and Omicron mutations were analyzed and compared, Professor Christian Hesse, a data specialist from the institute, explained that mortality rates from the Omicron variant were lower.
Noting that the Omicron variant spreads much faster compared to other COVID-19 mutations, Hesse noted that it was avoided in a milder way; He stated that in the light of data from South Africa, the USA and the UK, deaths due to Omicron were 8 times less than deaths due to the Delta variant.
1 out of every 2,100 Omicron infected people dies
Stating that Omicron cases accounted for 89 percent of the COVID-19 cases recorded in Germany last week, Hesse; He stated that the number of cases increased from 40 percent to 80 percent on weekdays. Hesse noted that the incidence rate, which doubled weekly in parallel with this situation, is a proof that the Omicron variant spreads faster, and stated that Omicron is similar to a tidal wave.
Stating that people with the Omicron variant can usually be treated in the general ward without the need for intensive care, Hesse said, “One out of every 10 people infected with Omicron and one out of every 5 people infected with Delta are hospitalized.” On the other hand, Hesse pointed out that if the increase in Omicron cases continues in this way, the number of intensive care units will increase again.
Hesse noted that according to the data obtained by RKI, 1 out of 2 thousand 100 people who caught Omicron in a 4-week period died by showing symptoms, and that this number is 1 out of every 250 patients for Delta mutation.
One out of every 1,400 unvaccinated people dies
In addition, Hesse underlined that there is an undeniable link between Omicron-induced death rates and COVID-19 vaccines. Regarding this issue, Hesse noted, “The risk of death for unvaccinated people is one in 1,400 people, and it is known as 1 in 2,600 for vaccinated people.”
