Apple canceled production of the OLED screen iPad Air last year due to cost. Allegedly, if Apple and Samsung can reach an agreement, Samsung OLED panels will be used in iPad models that will be released in 2024.

The chip and supply crises that started with the pandemic process caused smartphone manufacturers to shelve their projects. The OLED iPad Air, which came to the fore with leaks last year, also suffered from the crisis.

Samsung claims to produce OLED display for Apple iPad Air

It is stated that the company is concerned about the brightness and durability of the iPad Air with OLED screen. According to The Elec, Apple wants to restart the project.

Samsung rolled up its sleeves to produce a single-layer panel at the beginning of the project. Apple’s request for a two-layer panel due to durability and brightness caused the project to be shelved.

In order to reduce the cost of the project, Samsung needs to purchase new equipment. Therefore, the number of orders Apple will place for Samsung Display is expected to be above the average.

Making a statement on the subject, The Elec said, “As it is known, the South Korean display panel manufacturer is in cooperation with the Japanese Ulvac. Ulvac began developing a new machine for use in a Gen 8.5 IT OLED panel last year. The equipment, along with thin metal masks (FMM) used to precisely embed organic materials into the substrate, is an important technology required for Gen 8. 5 IT OLED panels. ” he stated.

If Samsung makes an agreement with Apple, it is expected to order all the necessary equipment in the third quarter of 2022. When production starts with the equipment that is expected to be delivered in 2023, iPad models that will be released in 2024 will be offered to users with OLED screen.

Another report suggested that Apple was also in talks with LG about the panel. In October, LG allegedly started work on two-layer panels for the iPad.
