In order to reduce the city’s air quality and related health problems in London, the city passed a controversial law, but supported by environmentalists, by the city council. Accordingly, the system, which was implemented in the city center in 2019, will spread to all London city limits in August 2023.

As it is known, since 2003, a fee is charged for vehicles entering the central part of London for the purpose of preventing traffic. The system, called ULEZ, was only for the city center when it first came out. In the current situation, internal combustion engine vehicles that do not meet the new type requirements will automatically have to pay £ 12.5 (approximately 285 ₺) per day when they enter the city limits.

The biggest benefit of the introduced application is the reduction of NOx emissions in the region by half. The main purpose of the fee application is to persuade the residents of the city to remove the most polluting vehicles, namely old vehicles, from the road. The system is also successful in this regard because while only 39% of the vehicles in the region announced in 2017 comply with these strict rules, it has reached 87% in 2019 and now 94%.

These requirements are as follows.

  • Motorcycles have to comply with Euro 3. (Vehicles after 2007)
  • Petrol-powered cars and vans must comply with Euro 4 (2006 and later vehicles)
  • Diesel vehicles have to comply with Euro 6. (2015 and later vehicles)
  • Buses and trucks must comply with Euro 6 or have to pay £100

The money raised will be spent on city transport infrastructure to improve the air quality of the city of London. A limited budget has been allocated for those who cannot afford to change their vehicles. Those who do not want to pay are advised to walk, cycle, use public transport or exchange with a new suitable vehicle.
