Although video calls, which have entered our lives with the COVID-19 epidemic, make our lives easier, they can sometimes turn into a nightmare. If you are using an external camera and this camera is not looking directly at you, a situation may occur as if you are not looking at the face of the people in front of you when you look at the screen. In other words, when you look at the screen to see the person you’re talking to, it looks like you’re looking elsewhere and not interested in the conversation.

While there are various workarounds, such as standing near or close to the camera, or trying to position the camera as close to the screen as possible, we may soon get rid of this problem completely thanks to artificial intelligence.

NVIDIA’s new Eye Contact Artificial Intelligence can offer a different solution to make it look like you’re always looking at the camera, even when you’re not looking at the camera. The posted video trailer offers an incredibly lifelike image that makes it hard for viewers to tell if you’re looking at the camera or not. Impressively, the AI continues to work even when the person is on their phone and there are other obstacles around their face.

While perhaps some tweaking is needed to make the gaze less sharp, the technology is welcomed by many who find it difficult to maintain eye contact. For some, especially those with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), eye contact can be uncomfortable, making the person seem disinterested during conversations. Eye Contact can make such people feel more comfortable in meetings.

This feature also has a disconnect capability. With this option, when you move a certain distance away from the camera, the AI constantly stops the gaze and waits for you to return to the minimum distance.

Although the disconnect feature may seem to cause problems in the video from time to time, we can easily say that it is quite impressive considering that it can be used by anyone with an RTX 2060 and later NVIDIA graphics card.

The Eye Contact feature is still in beta and as with all complex new technologies, it’s likely to have some major bugs.
