There were rumors that Nvidia is planning to add new GPU variants to some RTX 40 series graphics cards, such as the RTX 4070 and RTX 4080. Now, however, these rumors have turned into reality with the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition graphics card. Nvidia has quietly changed the GPU of the card.

Nvidia replaces its RTX 4090 GPU

According to previous reports, an updated GPU was needed to enable a new on-board voltage comparator circuit. The same reports suggested that this could result in cheaper cards, a lower build cost and therefore a lower price. For now, there is no significant price change for the RTX 40 series, but it looks like Nvidia has already made the mentioned change for the GeForce RTX 4090.
A user confirmed that the GeForce RTX 4090 FE sent to him has the GPU named AD102-301 in GPU-Z. Normally the card is supposed to come with the AD102-300. The card in question maintains the same Device PCI ID in GPU-Z but it appears to have changed by the SubID. Therefore, there is no BIOS change. It also appears that the maximum voltage of this board has also been reduced from 1.1 V to 1.07 V.

For now, it is difficult to say what the consequences would be if the voltage dropped a little. Because more examples are needed to understand whether there is any performance difference. However, it is unclear whether this change only applies to Founders Edition cards or whether it will apply to other special designs.
