According to reports, Nvidia postponed the release of the new H20 artificial intelligence (AI) chip, which it prepared specifically for its customers in China, until the first quarter of 2024. According to two sources (via Reuters), Nvidia will delay the release of the H20 chip until February or March because server manufacturers are reportedly experiencing integration problems with the chip.

China has to wait for Nvidia’s new chips

The HGX H20 is the most powerful of three China-focused chips Nvidia is developing to comply with new US export restrictions put in place in recent weeks. According to industry sources, this chip should have been released in November.

In addition to the H20, Nvidia also has L20 and L2 chips that are not affected by US restrictions. Opting for the AD102 GPU, the L20 series reportedly offers lower memory capacities of 48GB and 24GB GDDR6 while staying within the maximum processing performance of 4800 TOPS over the PCIe interface.

The new chips were designed to enable Nvidia to maintain market share in China after it was banned from shipping its advanced A800 and H800 products under tightened US rules. The new chips, which do not follow the rules, come with the company’s latest technologies, but their computing capacity is more limited.

Meanwhile, not only Nvidia is affected by the US restrictions, but also companies such as AMD. In fact, last August, AMD CEO Lisa Su announced that she planned to develop an artificial intelligence chip specifically designed for the Chinese market in order to benefit from the increasing demand for artificial intelligence chips in China. AMD is also preparing the Instinct MI300 platform to compete with Nvidia’s high-end solutions.
