Analytics firm IDC has released its second-quarter report of tablet and Chromebook shipments. While annual growth in tablets remained very low at 0.15% in the second quarter, Chromebooks saw a significant decline of 51.4% in the same period. HP was the biggest loser in the Chromebook segment, down 78.6%.
Looking at the top five tablet companies and their year-over-year performance, Apple now has a 31% market share. Samsung regressed to 18.1% market share with a decrease of 10.63%, Amazon (26.92%) with 13.6%, Lenovo with 8.7% (-25.67%), Huawei with 5.3%. (-0.16%) completes the top five of the list.
On the Chromebooks side, Dell Technologies took the first place with 25.5% market share (-15.5%), Acer Group (-28.9%) with 22.6%, Lenovo with 19.4% (-54%). ), with 15.6% HP (-78.6%) and 6.2% Samsung (-27%) make up the top five.
While the declines have certainly been felt more strongly on the side of Chromebook manufacturers, IDC research director Jitesh Ubrani says she’s hopeful. He notes that schools will likely continue to buy laptops for every student and should continue to be successful in the future as Chromebooks are popular in schools.
With schools resuming in September, Chromebook manufacturers may see an increase in sales as educational institutions buy the hardware they need. However, it is not clear how much this increase can compensate for the decrease.
