It was decided to test the global mRNA flu vaccine in humans. A Phase 1 trial has been initiated at Duke University testing the safety and immune response of H1ssF-3928 mRNA-LNP developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC).

Human trials of mRNA flu vaccine begin

In the trials to be conducted, 50 participants will be divided into three groups and they will be given 10, 25 and 50 micrograms of active drug, respectively. After the optimal dosage has been determined, 10 more participants will receive this metered vaccine. There will also be an additional group that will receive the existing quadrivalent seasonal flu vaccine, so researchers will have the opportunity to compare the immune response and safety of existing flu vaccines with the new vaccine. Trial participants will then be regularly evaluated over 12 months to see how the drug’s immune response is doing and to assess its short- and long-term safety.

While the numbers vary depending on which seasonal flu strains are common, from 2010 to 2020 in the United States, the flu hospitalized 710,000 people and caused 52,000 deaths. On the other hand, worldwide influenza causes 650,000 deaths each year.

Stop getting the flu vaccine every year

NIAID Acting Director Dr. “A universal flu vaccine would be a huge public health success and could eliminate both the need to develop seasonal flu vaccines annually and the need for patients to get flu shots every year,” said Hugh Auchincloss. Dr. Hugh Auchincloss also stated that the flu virus could cause a global pandemic, and said, “A universal flu vaccine can serve as an important line of defense against the spread of a future flu pandemic.”

The H1ssF-3928 mRNA-LNP vaccine developed in the mRNA-based flu vaccine race is not alone. With CureVac and GSK, Pfizer and BioNTech are already working on their own joint vaccines. Similarly, the trials of Moderna continue. It seems that the flu (influenza) will be resolved in the future.
