Electronic device advertisements often contain exaggerated descriptions, but when the customer starts using the device, they are disappointed to see that many of them are not as described. The European Union wants to put an end to deceptive advertisements.

No more deceptive ads

According to the newly prepared draft law, electronic device manufacturers within the borders of the European Union must write the contents of the box with an accurate description. For example, long battery life that does not reflect the truth, claims of environmentally friendly production, and an uncertain warranty are among them.

It is stated in the law that the battery duration should be clearly stated and the time when the system will start to slow down should be communicated to the consumer. Details of warranty coverage and estimated costs of parts repair also need to be reported.

Again, how sensitive the product is to the environment, what kind of recycling contribution it will make or whether it will offer a longer service life should also be specified. Otherwise, only environmentally friendly certificates will be issued, not environmentally friendly products. Finally, universal use of accessories such as adapters and cables and not restricting their functions are among the conditions. Parliament will begin discussing the new draft with member states in the coming weeks.
