The prices of electric cars have slowly begun to approach a more affordable and acceptable level. For many manufacturers, developing affordable electric city cars has become the holy grail of this field. As part of the Renault-Mitsubishi-Nissan collaboration, Nissan will produce a vehicle in this category together with the Renault Ampere unit. The new Twingo took its final form on this platform last month.
In fact, Renault was initially going to work with Volkswagen for the Twingo project, but then the two giants decided to part ways. Thus, the infrastructure that belonged entirely to the French company became more easily available for Nissan. Nissan CEO Makato Uchida stated that the new model will be “attractive and affordable”.
Ampere will also serve Mitsubishi
Nissan’s city electric vehicle will not be the only vehicle developed by the Ampere team. The team will also provide support for an SUV to be released under the Mitsubishi brand.
It is not yet known whether Nissan’s electric vehicle will be a completely new model or a conversion of an existing model, as other companies often do. Still, it is known that the company continues to work on Micra. Regarding the new projects, Renault CEO Luca De Meo only states that the project is going very well and that they are progressing in accordance with the schedule and budget.
Nissan will probably produce this new model at the Novo Mesto factory. The company promised the Slovenian government to produce 150 thousand vehicles annually for this facility.
