The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the southeast of our country was one of the strongest tremors in our country. The earthquake caused great destruction especially in Kahramanmaraş. The streets turned to rubble as many of the high-rise buildings in the center of the city collapsed. Aftershocks that lasted for hours after the earthquake also increased the damage.

According to the analysis of the New York Times based on satellite images, about 200 buildings in central Kahramanmaraş were damaged or completely collapsed. The modern center of the city, the area where hotels, restaurants and historical ice cream shops are located, was one of the most damaged areas. One of the buildings here was the Renaissance Residence.

Construction quality issue

It turned out that some of the buildings destroyed in the earthquake were new and modern and had earthquake resistance certificates. This has raised questions about construction standards and inspections in the country. Renaissance Residence was also at the center of these discussions. The New York Times published an analysis on the earthquake resistance and construction quality of the Renaissance Residence.

  • “The walls, pillars and other structural elements were designed differently in different parts of the building.”

  • “Also, the reason why the buildings fell towards the south was due to the incorrect placement of the connections and pillars.”

According to the analysis of the newspaper, it was revealed that the company that built the Renaissance Residence had faced similar problems before. The company had previously struggled with construction quality issues in its projects in earthquake-prone areas. It was also questioned whether the materials and techniques used in the construction of the Renaissance Residence comply with the standards.

Compared to other buildings destroyed in the earthquake, Renaissance Residence suffered more damage and collapsed. This situation raised serious concerns about the construction quality and durability of the building. According to the analysis of the newspaper, it was determined that there were structural deficiencies and faulty construction practices during the examinations on the building.

In particular, Rönesans Residence was a location where many of our citizens were stranded and could not be rescued during the earthquake. Because the three buildings were lined up side by side and collapsed on top of each other like a piece of paper. So even if people could be saved, they could not be saved for this reason. You can find the New York Times article explaining these in more detail here.
