As part of the US’s plans to neutralize carbon emissions, each state, region and city is trying to implement its own projects. Rise Light & Power, a New York-based energy asset manager with the Ravenswood Generating Station as its main asset, has submitted an offshore wind facility proposal to the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA).
New York’s largest power plant switches to wind power
The scope of the proposal is large, but the project aims to transform the 27-acre offshore oil and gas industrial site into an energy hub that will power one-fifth of New York City with offshore wind power.
The Ravenswood offshore wind project will reuse existing physical and electrical infrastructure, which will save New York electricity bill payers. Electrical connection will be provided from the offshore wind facility to the existing power plant and will be integrated into the city’s electrical system. On the other hand, the project also has significant community support, as the air quality in this part of the city is very poor and the asthma rate very high.
