The Mayor of New York announced that 1,430 city employees have been fired since October for failing to comply with vaccination regulations in effect. This figure represents less than 1 percent of the city’s total workforce.
Regulations work in two stages. New hires have to prove they have had their second vaccination. Employees who have taken unpaid leave in the past few months (and do not have access to health insurance) must show proof of a dose of the vaccine. In addition to those who have been fired, it is stated that 1,000 people have been vaccinated at the last moment in order not to lose their jobs in the last week.
More than 85 percent of New York residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 76 percent are fully vaccinated. This is well above the national average. Less than 65 percent of people in the United States have received at least two doses of the vaccine.
