Brad Smith, Microsoft’s chairman and vice chairman of the board, has called for a “regulatory plan” to ensure artificial intelligence (AI) remains under human control. Speaking at the B20 India 2023 Summit, the executive highlighted the need for “true clarity” on the goals and principles of AI regulation.
Stating that people want assurance that this new technology will not go bad after seeing what happened in too many science fiction movies, Smith stated, artificial intelligence is becoming an indispensable technology and requires transparency through standards set by stakeholders in all segments.
Smith believes that a regulatory plan should establish principles that apply at multiple levels: “They’ve seen too many science fiction movies gone wrong. We need companies and regulators to focus on that when we create something that feels like science fiction. This means that there is a real focus on knowing which cloud is being deployed, and knowing whether the generated content is specifically AI-generated.”
In addition, Microsoft has also released its own whitepaper after the summit, which recommends a regulatory plan for AI. This review includes requiring companies to know how their customers are using AI, establish national and global standards, and enforce regulations at different layers such as application, model, cloud and data center.
Smith’s comments come at a time when artificial intelligence technology and its implications are increasingly being studied. Last July, Microsoft, Google, and other companies in the US met with US President Biden to discuss the responsible development of artificial intelligence.
