Netflix’s growing collection of video game adaptations now includes one of Xbox’s best-known franchises. The streaming service is teaming up with The Coalition for a new Gears of War series. No details have been given for the cast, venue or release date.
The series revolves around the Locust, an aggressive species that nearly destroyed human civilization. The original Gears of War trilogy focuses on grey-haired veteran Marcus Fenix, but more recent games and spin-offs have focused on his son JD, his frequent ally Baird, and rebel soldier-turned Kait.
Netflix announced the new series with the following statement: “Gears of War launched 16 years ago today, and on this occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the Gears of War video game saga into a live-action movie. An animated series for adults will follow.”
The question, as always, is whether a legendary game can be well translated into a linear video format. While there has been some success with game-based shows like Netflix’s League of Legends series, these projects still lack a real reputation. Even the Halo adaptation received a mixed response. It is too early to determine how Gears of War will progress, but it is possible to say that there are many challenges ahead.
