YouTube has announced that it will allow both users and creators to gift their paid channel subscriptions. Such paid channel subscriptions have recently become popular on YouTube Gaming’s rival Twitch, but YouTube has kept a distance from this system, albeit a little. After first testing this system with certain publishers in Japan, the company has announced that it will now transition to this new gifting system in the US and UK. It is not clear for now whether the feature will be opened for other countries later on.
While many broadcasters see paid channel subscriptions as an easy way to generate revenue, they can also build their own communities this way. The standard monthly subscription price used for channel subscriptions on YouTube Gaming is usually $4.99. Users with paid subscriptions to the channel have the opportunity to access various badges and other special content published by the channel owner.
YouTube wants to increase the reach of its Gaming section in this way, but its main competitor, Twitch, continues to be a larger platform than YouTube in the US for live broadcasts. Well, do you think this move of YouTube is enough to catch up with Twitch? We are waiting for your comments below…
