Football fans around the world have been divided since VAR first came out. While some defend the sharper and fairer results brought by VAR, some argue that football is a beautiful game with people’s mistakes.
Of course, one of the situations where VAR works the most is offside positions. Again, according to some, millimetric offside decisions made with technology kill the spirit of football, while according to others, it increases the quality of the game. It seems that FIFA will further fuel these discussions by announcing the offside technology that it will use in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
The new offside technology announced by FIFA will work much faster and enable much sharper decisions.
The new semi-automatic offside technology developed by FIFA will make decisions much faster than the previous system, even in the most difficult offside decisions, and the 3D animation of the offside position will be broadcast live to the audience both in the stadium and on TV.
12 cameras placed in each stadium where the World Cup matches will be played in Qatar will follow 29 points on each player’s body, and a 3D model will be created and presented to the VAR room by knowing when the ball comes out of the foot, thanks to a sensor inside the match ball.
However, according to Collina’s statement, the fate of the offside decision will rest in the hands of the referee, whatever happens. VAR will call on the Referee to monitor the position for support purposes only. In other words, in millimetric situations, the middle referee may also decide ‘not offside’.
