More than a month after it hired several former DeepMind researchers, Twitter is reportedly interested in an in-house artificial intelligence project. Elon Musk recently purchased 10,000 GPUs for use in one of the company’s two remaining data centers, Business Insider reports.
Speaking to the news outlet, an unnamed source says there would be little reason for Musk to spend so much money on datacenter-grade GPUs, especially if Twitter didn’t plan to use it for AI work. He also states that the acquisition demonstrates Musk’s “decisive” approach to this effort.
The project is thought to involve the creation of a productive AI that the company will train on its own huge wealth of data. It is not yet clear how Twitter will use the technology. Insider says a productive AI could boost the platform’s search functionality or help the company rebuild its advertising business. The news, meanwhile, is an interesting take on the fact that Musk recently signed an open letter calling for a six-month hiatus from AI development.
Elon Musk was one of the founders of OpenAI, who was also the architect of ChatGPT. However, he later left OpenAI by selling all his shares. Although the reason for this separation is not known exactly, it seems possible that there was a power conflict since Musk was involved.
