SOCAMM COMES
According to Sedanily, Nvidia and three major memory manufacturers share performance tests by sharing SOCAMM prototypes with each other. If everything goes well, the mass production of the new memory standard may begin at the end of this year.
One of the biggest advantages of SOCAMM stands out as increasing power efficiency by integrating LPDDR5X memory into a direct substrate. In addition, the new memory standard will have 694 I/O port. This means a major leap compared to LPCAMM, which has a 644 ports and traditional drama with only 260 connections.
SOCAMM is expected to be used in the next generation of Project Digits AI computers introduced by Nvidia in CES 2025. Considering that AI applications require high memory capacity and bandwidth, Nvidia’s effort to establish a special standard in this field seems reasonable.
More interestingly, the SOCAMM standard is not a standard approved by Joint Electron Device Engineering Council). Nvidia’s independent management of this project also shows that the company wants to provide more control in the memory market.
SOCAMM will also have a modular and removable structure. This may offer users the opportunity to upgrade in the following years. In terms of size, an adult is as small as the middle finger.
