A report published in July this year claimed that Sony was developing a new version of PlayStation 5 and that this version would be called PlayStation 5 Pro. Additionally, several features of the game console, which has not been officially confirmed, were also announced, and it was said that Sony would release it in November 2024.

Since then, we’ve seen a few more leaks about what we can expect about the PS5 Pro. Now a new one has been added to these.

The leak came from a member of the Resetera forum named RandomlyRandom 67. It reveals many details about Sony’s upcoming game console, including information about the CPU, GPU, NPU, memory, performance improvement figures and launch time frame.

Zen 2 architecture for PlayStation 5 Pro processor

According to the post, the chipset that will power the upcoming game console, sourced from AMD and codenamed Viola, will be produced by TSMC in the company’s N4P manufacturing process. The CPU will use the Zen 2 architecture, the same architecture used by the CPU in the PS5, to ensure compatibility with the current-gen console. However, the frequency of the CPU cores will be “dynamic” with a peak frequency of 4.4GHz. It will also have higher L1, L2 and L3 cache capacities.

RDNA 3 architecture for PlayStation 5 Pro GPU

As for the GPU, the chipset in the PS5 Pro will use RDNA 3 architecture, which is a huge improvement over the RDNA 2 architecture used by the GPU inside the PS5. However, it will also have improvements for ray tracing from RDNA4, AMD’s upcoming GPU architecture. The GPU will reportedly have 60 processing units (CU). However, Sony will only enable 56 CUs in retail units. There is no information yet as to why the company is doing this.

According to the post, the GPU will have 3,584 shader units, 224 texture mapping units (TMU) and 96 render output units (ROP), and the GPU frequency can go up to 2GHz. It will also have 16GB GDDR6 memory with 18 Gbps speed and 576 GB/s bandwidth. With all these improvements, the leaker claims that the GPU in the PS5 Pro will deliver 14.33 teraflops (TFLOPs) of power, which is approximately 40% more than that in the PS5.

According to the post, this power will enable the PS5 Pro to deliver 50-60 percent better rasterization performance and more than twice better ray tracing performance in games compared to the PS5. There is also an NPU called XDNA2 on the console. Reportedly, this NPU is there to speed up Sony’s graphics upscaling technique that uses machine learning.

While the previous report claimed that Sony will launch the PS5 Pro in November 2024, the latest leak claims that the upcoming gaming console will arrive in September 2024.
