Windows 11 users noticed that programs won’t open after performing a system restore. Microsoft is aware of the issue and offered a workaround.

Microsoft says that users may encounter various errors when using applications distributed in the MSIX package format. Mostly, a warning message appears stating that the application cannot be opened. In some cases, the application has a copy in the Start menu, while sometimes the application freezes during launch.

Errors that can be encountered after system restore in Windows 11 are listed as follows:

  • “This application cannot be opened” warning message
  • App appears multiple times in the Start menu
  • Unresponsive on application launch
  • Application unresponsive and then crashes after I/O error

Microsoft says that the problem can be fixed by reinstalling the app from the Windows Store or its original source. Another suggested solution is to run Windows Update.
