Jim Keller is a giant in chip design and led the development of the original Zen architecture in 2012. Although he left AMD three years later, Keller’s information and explanations are important for the next generation of Zen architectures. Keller is currently the CEO of Tenstorrent. While the famous name shared information about the new generation RISC-V architecture in Ascalaon chips, he also gave information about the Zen 5 architecture on performance, frequency values ​​and power consumption.

Zen 5 can take a leap in performance

Before moving on to the performance figures, it should be noted that all information is for the server ecosystem, but the design between EPYC and Ryzen is very similar, so a general performance estimation can be made. In this context, according to Keller, the Zen 5 core architecture will be about 30 percent faster than Zen 4. This performance difference is revealed in the SPEC CPU 2017 INT Rate test. In terms of clock speeds, 4 GHz levels are pointed out. The current EPYC Genoa and Intel Sapphire Rapids families reach clock speeds of 3.70 and 3.80 GHz, respectively. There seems to be no change in power consumption. Therefore, it seems possible for Zen 5-based processors to be 23 percent or faster per cycle than Zen 4.
AMD’s roadmaps confirm that Zen 5 will arrive in 2024. The Zen 5 architecture will come in three variants (Zen 5 / Zen 5 V-Cache / Zen 5C) and will have integrated artificial intelligence and machine learning optimizations in the chip itself. While emphasizing enhanced performance and efficiency for Zen 5, AMD says a brand new microarchitecture is coming.

The Zen 4 architecture itself had a 15 percent gain over the Zen 3 cores, the Zen 3 architecture had a 30 percent gain over the Zen 2, and the Zen 2 architecture had a 6 percent gain over the first generation of Zen. So if there is a similar leap in performance to that achieved with Zen 3, AMD could be very strong in the next generation. However, it should be noted that these are only guesses. More detailed information about Zen 5 will be released in the future.
