Instagram is rolling out a new feature for stories. This feature, called Private Story Likes, will both prevent your DM box from filling up and offer a new way for your likes.

Instagram is launching a new feature called Private Story Likes that lets you like an Instagram story without sending a DM to someone. Previously, any reply you sent someone about a story – whether it’s an emoji or a full message – appeared as a reply in the DM inbox. With this new feature, you will be able to show that you like a story without filling out the user’s DMs. “Now, as you go through stories, there will be a heart icon between sending a message and that little paper airplane,” said Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram

. “And if you tap on it, it will send a like to the owner of that story and this like will appear on the viewer page with them and not in your DM thread.”

Starting to roll out today, you can now send some love by liking people’s stories without sending a DM.

Stories are one of the important parts of Instagram and many users prefer to share in this area. Likes on stories will not appear publicly. But when you look at the view page of a story, you will be able to see who left a like. “The idea here is to allow people to express more support for each other, while also cleaning up the DMs a little bit,” Mosseri says.
