Although Tesla’s history is not very old, it has managed to be among the most important automobile manufacturers. According to the latest news, Tesla is removing ultrasonic sensors (USS) from some of its vehicles to support its advanced driver assistance system and other active safety features. Here are the details!

Starting this month Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will no longer include ultrasonic sensors

Electric car maker Tesla made a statement on Tuesday. In a statement, it said it will remove ultrasonic sensors from its vehicles starting this month. However, only cameras will continue to be used in security and driver assistant features.

Tesla vehicles now have 12 ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear bumpers. Short-range sound sensors are mainly used in parking applications and to detect nearby objects. However, starting this month, all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles manufactured for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan will not include these 12 sensors. It will also stop including sensors in Model S and Model X cars next year, according to plans.

Regarding moving away from ultrasonic sensors, Tesla says it will not affect the crash safety of cars. However, vehicles without sensors will temporarily lose access to some features such as parking assist, automatic parking, call and smart call. The company plans to restore using its camera-based system.

However, the decision to avoid ultrasonics and radar is a decision made in support of ADAS. Automakers use lidar to offer ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, and automatic lane changing, which adjust a car’s speed to the surrounding traffic. Many tech companies and automakers use multiple sensors. Tesla, on the other hand, only relies on cameras and artificial intelligence to help a vehicle recognize its environment.
