As you know, there is a big taxi problem in Turkey, especially in Istanbul. Situations such as the lack of taxis and the fact that drivers prefer only tourists instead of local customers have caused a major crisis and this problem has been reflected in the world press as well as social media and local press.

In these days when various solutions are produced to end this crisis, Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç presented his new draft law to the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in order to prevent the change of taxi plates from hand to hand. prof. Özgenç explained the details of the draft law to Esra Boğazlıyan from Hürriyet.

Özenç stated that the draft law he prepared is “closed to abuse”.

Stating that thanks to the license plate-based licensing system, the plates circulate from hand to hand, and that the taxi drivers feed 3 different families, namely the plate owner, the renter and their own family, because of the rented plates. Dr. Özgenç stated that because of this system, the drivers could not get paid for their efforts and this led to bigger crises.

Özgenç stated that the biggest difference between the draft law he prepared and the law currently in force is that it is “free from abuse”, and emphasized that the system should become auditable and with this system, both taxis and taxi drivers can be of higher quality.

The following statements were included in Özgenç’s statement; “The current system causes the license plates to be collected in the hands of certain people. A system should be established in which only the taxi driver who is steering the steering wheel earns money in return for their efforts. Whoever owns the license plate, the license should be his. The license should be given to the person. The transfer of the license from hand to hand for money should be prevented. Thus, with methods called piracy and UBER. being included in the system would also be prevented.”
