It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the newest movie of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is one of the most eagerly awaited movies of recent times. We recently shared with you that a brand new video is coming from the movie, which will be 126 minutes long and will meet with its audience on May 6, 2022.
Now, days before the movie’s release, an interesting news came. After the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was reported that the highly anticipated film was banned in Saudi Arabia. The reason for this was a character in the movie.
The movie was banned due to a gay character
According to the news shared by Variety, Saudi Arabia banned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. According to the information obtained, it was stated that this decision was taken because of a gay character who will take part in the movie. If you ask who this character is; A superhero named America Chavez, who will be newly included in the universe. It is stated that this character, who will be played by Xochtil Gomez, is gay in the movie, just like in the comics.
In the statements made, Saudi Arabian authorities asked Disney to make changes in the movie about this character; However, it was reported that the giant company did not approve this. After that, it was stated that the film, which will be released on May 5, will not be allowed to be screened in the country. It was also among the news that similar decisions were made from some other Arab Gulf countries such as Kuwait and Qatar.
This is not the first time that such a decision has been taken by Saudi Arabia. The country had previously censored another Marvel movie, ‘Eternals’, on the grounds that two people of the same gender kissed. In addition, another film named ‘West Side Story’, which won many awards, was banned on the grounds that it had a trans character.
Unfortunately, we still encounter such news, but the new Doctor Strange movie continues to be eagerly awaited by Marvel fans. Benedict Cumberbatch will again appear as Doctor Strange in the production, which will tell the aftermath of Spider-Man: No Way Home. We will see Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff again in the movie, which is stated to be full of surprises as well as Cumberbatch. It should also be noted that the giant production is directed by Sam Raimi, the man behind the original Spider-Man trilogy.
