Extended Reality (XR) is the name given to technologies that combine real environments with technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality. We may see new developments in this area soon because Google is also adding the XR title category to the Play Store.
The exact meaning of this decision is unknown, but the number of people who think that Google is preparing to enter the XR market is not small. On the other hand, there is no information about whether the company will enter this field with its own device or by agreeing with other partners.
Play Store is expanding
The latest version of the Play Store app includes an XR header icon and the words “XR Header.” In other words, Google is introducing a new category similar to the smartphone, tablet and wearable device categories we have seen so far. Google has previously tried its hand at mobile virtual reality experiences with initiatives such as Cardboard and Daydream.
This expansion decision is also noteworthy as it comes at a time when Google is working on a new XR headset with Samsung and Qualcomm. In this joint work, three technology giants aim to develop a high-end XR headset.
Google’s plans are not yet clear and the technology giant will share more details on the subject soon. Whatever the path to follow, the opening of the XR store on Android will help this technology develop and develop further.
