A US judge has ruled that Heather Morgan, known as Razzlekhan, who was among the protagonists of the massive cryptocurrency hack and laundering, should be released on bail. Morgan and her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, were released on bail by another judge last week, but the government ordered an immediate delay over the previous ruling, saying the couple could potentially use millions of dollars’ worth of unsecured Bitcoin to escape.
Monday’s hearing took place to review the release order and to consider further prosecution and defense evidence. The presiding judge ruled that Morgan could await his trial at home if he was released on bail, but it did not break the detention of his wife, Lichtenstein. So Lichtenstein will remain in custody.
- Who are Heather Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein?
Following his arrest, Morgan gained a lot of attention on social media after it was discovered that he was posting rap music, video and fashion content under the name Razzlekhan. Clips of particularly spooky moments from his music videos have been shared online since the news of his arrest.
The couple’s lawyer argues that their escape is unlikely for several reasons. The first is that Morgan is currently recovering from surgery. It is also alleged that if they wanted to escape, they would have done so within a week or two before being arrested.
The judge says Lichtenstein will not be released on bail because government evidence claims it is largely in control of the funds. Morgan is thought to be less likely to have access to funds to help him escape.
