It has been announced that Netflix has acquired an important game studio. With this move, it was once again revealed how seriously Netflix takes the game business.

Netflix has announced that it will acquire Finnish mobile game developer Next Games, which has developed an RPG based on Stranger Things. With all paperwork completed by summer, the deal will cost Netflix approximately $72 million. Next Games has a lot of experience in the TV connected games market and previously developed The Walking Dead: Our World, which was updated in sync with the (famous) zombie series.

As Netflix Vice President of Games Michael Verdu explained, Next Games will be a “core studio” and “expand its internal game studio capabilities”. This seems quite in line with Netflix’s strategy of expanding what it has to offer users beyond the prestigious series. In addition to the Stranger Things and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance games offered so far, Netflix has also released a Hearthstone-like card battle game called Arcanium: Rise of Akhan and Krispee Street.
