Netflix launched its gaming service by investing in mobile games in November 2021. The company has since acquired multiple game development studios and increased its game-focused staff. However, it is still open to improvement, which the company seems to be aware of and continues to develop quietly.
Netflix has released a game controller app for iOS
Netflix has quietly and without any announcement released a game controller app called a Game Controller on the Apple App Store. The release of the app seems to confirm rumors that the company will soon make it possible to play games on smart TVs as well.
The short description of the free application reads “Coming soon on Netflix”. It is aimed to play games on televisions with the Netflix Game Controller. The app connects to the TV and turns the phone or tablet into a game controller for gaming.
After opening the Game Controller, it is necessary to select a game on the TV and then follow the instructions provided by the application to connect to the controller. Since Netflix’s games application is still in beta on television, both games and this new remote application do not support all devices for now.
Currently, the Netflix Game Controller app has limited functionality. Images from the App Store show a controller design on a solid black background, with a virtual joystick on the left and an XYAB-labeled key assembly on the right, similar to Xbox and Nintendo Switch controllers.
Although the labels of the keys are similar to Xbox and Switch, their arrangement is very different. The XYB keys are arranged around a large A key, resembling a cat’s paw.
The game controller app is not yet available on Android and it is unknown if it will come. It is also stated on the App Store that it can only be used with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 15.0 or higher. On the other hand, it is not yet known which games will support the game controller.
