Factors such as the increase in industrial production with the passing of the effect of the pandemic and the fact that many people had to work from home due to the pandemic and were loaded with natural gas, led to an increase in natural gas prices around the world. While Turkey is expected to get its share from this price increase in the near future, Özge Özdemir from BBC Turkish brought together the opinions of the authorities who made calls on the subject such as “don’t use natural gas”.
Many contracts with countries from which Turkey imports gas expire this year. With the expiration of these contracts, it is predicted that natural gas prices in the country will increase by 30-35% on average. As such, the authorities began to think that people should limit their use of natural gas, even if there is no hike this year, and that they should save money by sitting in thick clothes at home.
“Build your house at 18 degrees so that less natural gas is consumed”
Former BOTAŞ (Petroleum Transport Joint Stock Company) manager and energy expert Ali Arif Aktürk is one of the people who emphasizes that citizens should be careful even if natural gas prices are not increased. Expressing that he expects an increase of 30-35% in gas prices in the country in the coming period, Aktürk gave the following statements in his statements; “How they reflect this to the consumer depends on the power of the Treasury. If the winter is very cold, gas power plants are cut off in troubled times, then power cuts begin, and they solve the power cuts by walking around.
Even if the government does not raise money, do not use gas, try to use less. After all, this is something that will harm the country and the state. Get your insulation done, put on your fleece, sweaters, set up your house at 18 degrees so that less natural gas is consumed. ”
“Any price increase should be expected”
Natural gas usage by sectors in Turkey
Energy expert Mehmet Doğan, who stated that the increase in natural gas prices around the world will be reflected in every product that goes into production, said that the contracts made in the purchase of natural gas create an unfair competition environment for the producers. Stating that many factories are experiencing difficulties in production due to this competitive environment, Doğan continued his statement; “It is necessary to expect a deficiency in the supply of all kinds of goods and an increase in all kinds of prices,” he said.
According to experts, the reason for this crisis is “carbon neutral footprint”
Another energy expert, Ali Arif Aktürk, stated that one of the reasons behind this crisis is the studies on green energy. Thinking that the carbon neutral world is just a dream, Aktürk’s thoughts on the subject are as follows; “Let’s move to a carbon-neutral world, everyone wants it. But there is no way to manage this with wind, sun, without a backup. You either have a nuclear power plant, or you will produce electricity from gas, coal or oil in a period when they cannot produce it.”
