A stray meteorite from outer space brought the end of the dinosaurs. A giant crater was formed by the impact of the impact, and the events following the impact caused the extinction of giant creatures. There are plans to prevent people from experiencing a similar fate.
One of these plans is NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test mission, called DART. This project, which looks like it came out of science fiction movies, will be tested in September. For this purpose, the asteroid to be “shot” was also determined.
Aim, ready, fire!
NASA, which wants to make sure that the DART mission will work when necessary, will make the first trial on the meteorite Dimorphos for this purpose. This meteorite poses no threat to Earth, according to the statement from NASA. In fact, we see this phrase in almost all of NASA’s marketing products.
In fact, the word Double, which is denoted by the letter D in the name of DART, is not something added just for the name of the system dart. The system fires two vehicles at the same time. This is how meteors are deflected, thanks to this two-tool system. In the first attempt, Dimorphos and the Didymos meteorite next to it will actually be hit. These two asteroids form a binary system. Thus, the system will be tested with different targets.
According to NASA officials, the collision will be faster than 23,000 kilometers per hour. On the other hand, in this collision, do not think of the movie Armageddon, the celestial body will not disappear, only its direction will change. Measurements with ground telescopes will show how successful the process is. According to NASA researchers, this study will also provide important data for systems to be developed in the future.
