NASA has released the most detailed map of Mars ever made. This interactive map works just like Google Earth and every detail of the planet can be observed in detail. Using the map, any point on Mars can be explored topographically or without color. In addition, the famous positions of Mars can be reached quickly.
The Global CTX Mosaic of Mars map consists of more than 110,000 images captured by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) black-and-white Context Camera (CTX). Each pixel represents an astonishing 25 square meters, and the entire mosaic image contains 5.7 trillion pixels.
NASA releases 3D map of Mars
According to the statement made by NASA, the new 3D map of the Red Planet was created by Caltech’s Bruce Murray Planetary Visualization Laboratory after 6 years of development and tens of thousands of hours of work. The idea behind the map is stated to be to create an interactive experience that allows everyone to explore various different regions of Mars.
So how was the map created? To create a map of Mars, the researchers turned to developing an algorithm designed to find and match images with certain features and similarities. The algorithm was able to successfully put together 97,000 images, and the remaining 13,000 images were put together manually by Dickson. Hotkeys have also been added to the interface, making it easy to find the most famous places of Mars or available research areas. For example, take a closer look at Olympus Mons, the highest known volcano and highest mountain in the Solar System, or Gale Crater, home to NASA’s Curiosity rover, which has been slowly climbing Mount Sharp for 10 years.
