NASA and Axiom Space have finally shared with Earth what Artemis III astronauts will wear while walking on the Moon. The duo unveiled a prototype spacesuit that teams will use for Moon walks near the Moon’s South Pole. As promised, the design was designed to accommodate a wider range of body types. It also has more flexible and exploration-oriented tools than previous spacesuit models.

The helmet includes both lights and an HD camera to share experiences. Astronauts enter the suit through a flap on their life support backpack. While the gloves are designed for extended use in microgravity, more joints allow users to kneel and otherwise move with ease. The design has measures to deal with the extreme cold of permanently shadowed areas on the Moon.

However, at this point, it should be noted that the outfit to be worn on the Moon is not the black version seen in the image above. Created by the costume designer of For All Mankind, the black cover aims to hide the special design underneath. The completed and used spacesuit will be white to protect the astronauts from extreme heat.

You can watch the video prepared by Axiom Space on how it designed this spacesuit, right below.

WHEN WILL ARTEMIS III BE LAUNCHED?

The Artemis III mission is scheduled to launch in December 2025. This mission will be the first crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17 reached the Moon in 1972 and is poised to include the first woman of color as well as the first woman to walk on the Moon. The two people who reach the surface will stay there for less than a week, performing up to four Moonwalks, including rover expeditions and ice sample collection. The other two crew members will remain in the Orion capsule, which will carry the crew when they return using a SpaceX Starship.

This spacesuit isn’t the only spacesuit available to NASA. Other companies continue to compete for orders to be used in future Moon missions and International Space Station operations.
