As you know, NASA’s Curiosity Rover, which landed on Mars on August 5, 2012, is collecting new information about the surface of the planet. Recently, images from the rover pointed to a possible water source in the Red Planet’s Gale Crater. Now, NASA has made an incredible discovery in this region of Mars.

NASA’s spacecraft finds traces of dried water on Mars

For those who don’t know, NASA thinks that Mount Sharp, located in the middle of Mars’ Gale Crater, provides a rich environment for ancient microbial life. In this context, Curiosity, which has been investigating the surface of the planet since 2014, has found new evidence pointing to the presence of water on Mars, surprising the researchers.

The new image shared by NASA shows us evidence of a dried-up lake on Mars billions of years ago. However, these wave-eroded rock deposits were found about 800 meters from Curiosity’s Mount Sharp climb, the Curiosity team said. Therefore, the researchers did not expect to see such clear signs of a large body of water.

In the statement, Ashwin Vasavada, project manager of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, stated that they made explorations in many lake beds during the mission, but they never encountered wave traces with such clarity. NASA, on the other hand, stated that Mount Sharp functions as a kind of “Mars timeline” for scientists. According to the space agency, Mount Sharp at 5,500 meters sheds light on how Mars evolved from an abundant water and a warmer climate to a freezing desert.
