There is no medium in which sound waves can travel in space, which is believed to be an infinite void. This is why space is considered completely silent. However, this silence is not due to the silence of the objects in space, but to the inability of sound waves to progress.

Black hole sound recorded

In fact, there is sound in the space environment, but sound waves do not reach us. However, there is a way for sounds in space to travel. NASA also shared a sound recording that surprised us, as if proving this situation.

NASA recently shared an eerie audio clip on Twitter that represents real sound waves carried by gas and plasmas in the Perseus galaxy cluster, 250 million light-years from Earth. In the post made by NASA, the following statements were included:

The misconception that there is no sound in space arises because most space is empty and does not allow sound waves to travel. There is so much gas in this galaxy cluster that we were able to capture real sound. Here the volume was raised to hear a black hole and and mixed with other data!

Astronomers had discovered long ago that the black hole at the center of Perseus sends out pressure waves. These pressure waves spread the hot gas surrounding the galaxy to the environment. These fluctuations can be converted into sound in various ways.

Although the acoustic signals produced by the black hole were first identified in 2003 with data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, they had not been brought into the hearing range of the human ear until now. Scientists have raised these vibrations quadrillions of times to make them audible to humans.

We can say that the resulting sound is quite frightening. Thinking that this sound, which sounds like it came out of a science fiction movie, comes from a black hole, increases the size of the fear even more. So what do you think about this sound coming from the Perseus galaxy cluster? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
