The International Space Station (ISS) has hosted many space projects since 1998. During this time, dozens of astronauts visited this place. The station is in the news with a different event this time. NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei came up with an interesting news together with Pyotr Dubrov.
Astronaut Mark Vande Hei sets a record by staying on the ISS for 341 days
NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei is about to set a record for longest spaceflight, accompanied by Russian cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov. The astronauts had reached the International Space Station (ISS) on April 9, 2021. Vande Hei, who has been working since then, has equaled the NASA astronaut record for the longest stay on the ISS, held by astronaut Scott Kelly in 2016. Vande Hei, whose duty is still continuing, became the owner of the new record today.
The team plans to return to Earth next month. When they return, they will have the record of staying on the ISS for 355 days. The team did not know that they would actually break records at the beginning of their mission. Because they first flew to the ISS with a 6-month mission planning. But changes to crew rotation schedules in the fall led to longer stays and a new record. NASA President Bill Nelson congratulated the astronauts with these words.
Today, astronauts Vande Hei and Pyotr Dubrov are making history. It surpasses the record for longest single spaceflight ever made by a NASA astronaut held by Scott Kelly! Such a long stay will help us understand the effects of longer missions in space. Thanks and congratulations for your service!
Astronaut Vande Hei continued to work on a series of experiments during his stay. In addition to these works, he continued to share the unique photos he took from the ISS. There will be a series of reviews on Vande Hei on his return. So much so that how the body reacts under long-term microgravity conditions will be observed.
