From time to time, we come across news from anywhere in the world about mysterious events that are difficult to explain. Recently, a voice that has been heard for days in Thessaloniki, Greece, joined this news. Residents of Thessaloniki say they have heard a sound almost every night since December, as if something is hitting something in the northern areas of the city.

The source of the mysterious sound, which is stated to be heard the most in the city, especially at the junction of the Kphisias and Akropoleos roads, is not yet known. This underground sound, which feels like an echoing crash, is what many guess is caused by a natural or some kind of seismic event. The shared recordings of the terrible sound heard in Thessaloniki were as follows:

While the source of the sound, which is reported to be heard with vibration at times, continues to be a mystery, a statement came from Gerasimos Houliaras, Head of Geodynamic Research at the National Observatory of Athens. Houliaras stated that researchers at Aristotle University continue to work to find out whether the sound is caused by some kind of geological event or something mechanical.

While the representatives of the Thessaloniki municipality’s water network explained that the sound was not caused by the work in the pipes or any natural gas conductor, some users who saw this sound on the internet shared a mechanic that could explain the issue. This mechanic was called ‘Water hammer’. Accordingly, the velocity of the water in the pipe system changes rapidly, so a pressure was created. With the water hammer, there is a sound as if the pipe is being hit.

A similar sound was heard in Denizli before, and it was explained that the reason for the sound was bubbles accumulating in the water network. The images and sound in Denizli were as follows:
