The American National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) has sued Twitter for $250 million in damages on behalf of 17 music companies for copyright infringement. Music companies are demanding payment of $150,000 for each of the more than 1,700 songs.

It should be noted that among the musicians represented in the lawsuit, there are many names such as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Travis Scott. NMPA chief David Israelite said Twitter condones and encourages copyright infringement for profit.

Making huge profits from unlicensed music

According to Union members, the social network is making huge profits from using unlicensed music without paying the necessary license fees. According to the lawsuit, this gives Twitter an “unfair advantage” over rivals such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat, which pay license fees.

The head of the NMPA noted that Twitter is the largest social network that refuses to license the millions of songs posted on its platform. The institution says that they repeatedly applied to Twitter to demand payment of license fees, but copyright violations did not stop even after Elon Musk bought the company.
