While the era of fossil fuels is slowly coming to an end, many manufacturers are concentrating on electric cars. The Porsche brand also has an important place in the electric car market with the Taycan model. However, the German automaker does not seem to want to say goodbye to internal combustion engines yet.

Porsche will give life to internal combustion engines with synthetic fuel

Porsche has officially started the production of synthetic fuels to secure the future of cars with internal combustion engines. The project, which will take place at a newly built facility in Chile, was kicked off this week by Porsche board members Barbara Frenkel and Michael Steiner. As part of the event, executives filled the Porsche 911 with synthetic fuel.

The brand’s new synthetic fuels are produced at the Porsche plant in a wind-powered operation with the help of water and carbon dioxide. In this way, it is aimed to keep the carbon dioxide emissions of internal combustion engines at very low levels.

Porsche has now determined two paths for the future. The company, which will focus on electric cars first, is also turning to synthetic fuels. Porsche, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions with synthetic fuels, thinks that other companies should follow the same path.

The Stuttgart manufacturer first plans to produce 130,000 liters of eFuel per year. The fuels produced within the scope of this pilot project will primarily be used in motorsport organizations such as Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and in the brand’s experience centers.

After this stage, Porsche plans to increase production to 55 million liters per year in a few years. Porsche thinks that production can increase up to 550 million liters towards the end of the 2020s.

There are more than one reason why the company chose Chile as its production location. Porsche will be able to benefit from renewable energy in abundance, primarily because it is a windy region. In addition, fuel can be easily transported thanks to the facility’s proximity to the Strait of Magellan and Cabo Negro port.

In this period when electric cars are increasing day by day, internal combustion engines seem to have a few words to say. So what do you think about synthetic fuels? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
