Motorcycle courier deaths, the number of which has increased in recent accidents, came to the fore once again today. The members of the Istanbul Motorcycle Couriers Association, gathered in front of the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan, made a press statement about the difficulties and troubles of the couriers.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Murat Tomris, President of the Istanbul Motorcycle Couriers Association, stated that the burden on them increased with the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed the discomfort of the couriers from the current situation.
“We are not robots.”
“We are human, we have news value. Just like you are sad when a cat and dog dies, you have to be sad when a person dies there. The difficulty has increased with the pandemic. We are the ones who bring everything from your bread to your socks. We are not robots. We also have a family.” Speaking in the form of Tomris, the drivers behind the wheel also warned not to use the phone.
Emphasizing that even the smallest accidents can have big consequences, Tomris stated that employers ignore the complaints of the couriers by saying that “if you do not work, there are many couriers”. Stating that they are sometimes forced to violate the rules due to the speed rating, Tomris said that they also want the speed rating to be removed.
“No package is worth more than human life.”
Noting that they are there to support the motorcouriers, Lawyer Armağan Gültekin underlined that they absolutely do not accept the ‘no news’ statement made about the motorcourier who lost his life in the traffic accident that occurred on 3 October.
Stating that the main problems were food orders that had to be delivered within 30 minutes or the couriers not being taken to the site elevator, Gültekin said, “Everyone should know that no package has more value than human life. No one should be subject to time constraints that take the life of another person. “he stated. Emphasizing the need to support couriers who are constantly working during the pandemic period, Gültekin also drew attention to the fact that the only reason the couriers do not follow the rules from time to time is that they do not want to lose their jobs.
