The bill, which aims to secure the rights of crypto miners in the United States state of Montana, has passed the Montana House of Representatives.
The legislation, which passed the Senate in February, will go to Governor Greg Gianforte’s desk with the approval of the Montana House of Representatives. Although Gianforte has the right to veto the bill, it seems unlikely that he will do so, as the architect of the bill belongs to the same party as State Senator Daniel Zolnikov.
The Bill Aims to Protect Miners’ Rights
Bill 178, which prevents local authorities from blocking crypto mining activities, was passed by 64 votes to 35 during the third session on April 12.
The legislation aims to establish the right to mine digital assets and prohibit discriminatory electricity fees imposed on cryptocurrency miners. It also aims to remove the zoning law authorization used to prevent mining activities taking place at home. The bill also prohibits any extra taxes on the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment. The bill classifies digital assets consisting of cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and NFTs as personal property.
In early April, another bill protecting crypto miners from discriminatory regulations and taxes also passed the Arizona House of Representatives and is awaiting the governor’s decision.
