American pharmaceutical giant Moderna has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech for violating patents in the development of the first Covid-19 vaccine approved in the USA. According to Reuters, the company claims that Pfizer and BioNTech have copied Moderna’s technology and used it to create their own medicines.

“We are filing these lawsuits to protect the innovative mRNA technology platform we developed, invested billions of dollars to build, and patented in the decade before the Covid-19 outbreak,” said Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna.
Claimed for pecuniary damages
Following the announcement of the lawsuit, Pfizer shares fell 1.4%, while BioNTech shares fell about 2%. As representatives of Moderna have stated, the company has filed a claim for pecuniary damage through the court in an amount that has not yet been disclosed.
Moderna was founded 10 years ago and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company had developed an innovative mRNA vaccine technology that significantly accelerated the creation of new immune drugs. Moderna earned $10.4 billion from its Covid-19 vaccine, while rival Pfizer earned $22 billion from its coronavirus vaccine.
