At the beginning of AI research, it was hoped that many problems would be solved when the capabilities of electronic equipment caught human synapses. We’ve gone far beyond that point now.

They’ve succeeded in building AI chips that mimic synapses, but are a million times faster, and even tremendously more energy efficient than currently existing designs, an MIT team reported. Also, this inorganic material can be easily added to the current chipmaking kit.

Murat Önen, the lead author of the article, said in a statement that “when you get an analog processor, you no longer work on networks that everyone is working on. You’re training networks of unprecedented complexity that no one else can afford, and therefore outperforms all of them. In other words, it’s not just like a faster car, it’s a spacecraft,” he says.

Önen says that the speed they have achieved is absolutely astonishing for them as well, as normally they would not apply such extreme areas across devices “so that they don’t turn into ash”. However, he says here that the protons accelerate to very high speeds and are a million times faster than before, and that this movement does not cause any damage thanks to the small size and low mass of the protons, and it is “almost like being teleported”.
