It has been stated that Samsung’s advertisements for multiple smartphone models are misleading. In the last case in Australia, it was stated that some of Samsung’s phones were not water resistant as claimed. Thereupon, the company was fined $9.8 million.
Samsung to pay $9.8 million for water-resistance ads
As part of the latest lawsuit in Australia, Samsung was fined. It turned out that the technology giant used misleading statements in the water resistance ads of the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, A5, A7, S8, S8 Plus and Note 8 models. According to the Australian judge’s decision, thousands of customers were harmed by these ads.
It was stated that seven Samsung Galaxy models, which were introduced to the market between 2016 and 2018, fell short in terms of water resistance. Samsung claimed in its advertisements that the phones can be charged even when wet. However, it turned out that the devices do not have such a capability.
It is stated that Samsung has sold a total of 3.1 million units of the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, A5, A7, S8, S8 Plus and Note 8 models in Australia. Although it is not known how many of these devices were damaged, it was reported that hundreds of customers were damaged.
“Samsung’s water-resistance claims were a major selling point for Galaxy phones,” said Gina Cass-Gottlieb, Chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. “Consumers may have been exposed to misleading advertisements before purchasing a new phone.”
Agreeing to pay $9.8 million under the lawsuit, Samsung also has to cover the $200,000 investigation cost. It should be noted that the South Korean company has not yet made a statement regarding the case.
