The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) has opened an investigation into Tesla for misleading the company in the range of some models. Stating that official data can only be provided under certain conditions, KFTC will expand the investigation to fine the company.
Automobile manufacturers generally obtain technical data by calculating according to optimum conditions. It is known that the fuel consumption in internal combustion engines is prepared in a similar way and the average consumption is calculated.

Tesla faces misleading data investigation in South Korea
Tesla, which allegedly violated the Fair Labeling and Advertising Law, states in the technical data of Model 3 that the vehicle has a range of 528 km. However, KFTC points out that the range of the electric vehicle will decrease when the temperature drops below freezing. Stating that the range will differ in practice with the official data, the commission will fine the company.
Stating that the company exaggerated the battery performance of some models, KFTC announced that the investigation was opened for this reason. The agency will hold a meeting to determine penalties and to thoroughly examine Tesla’s violations.
KFTC will also examine Tesla’s deposits to determine whether the company will be fined. According to the electrical product purchasing regulation in South Korea, customers have to pay a deposit of $83 for online ordering. It is being investigated whether deposit fees stop on Tesla deposits.
Musk sold a total of 15.7 million Tesla shares worth $16.4 billion in 2021. It disposed of a total of 20.7 million shares, including the donated shares. Musk, who currently owns 172.6 million Tesla shares, is the company’s largest individual shareholder with a 17 percent stake.
