WhatsApp took a decision a while ago that would negatively affect millions of iPhone users. According to the statement made by WABetaInfo, some iOS devices will not be able to access the application. This means that if you have one of the smartphones below, the app will not work for you very soon.

WhatsApp ends support for iOS 10 and 11

WABetaInfo announced that as of October 24, 2022, WhatsApp will stop supporting iOS 10 and iOS 11 operating systems. The company, which has already sent notifications to users running one of these two versions, announced its decision as follows:

WhatsApp will stop supporting this iOS version as of October 24, 2022. Please update your phone to the latest iOS version by going to Settings > General and tapping Software Update.

WhatsApp also didn’t forget to update the “Supported operating systems” page in the Help Center. Added “iPhone with iOS 12 or higher” to the recommended devices section. On this page, it was previously stated that the application supports devices with iOS 10 and above.

Which devices does it affect?

WhatsApp will not work on iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C models that do not support iOS 12 operating system. It will continue to work smoothly on iPhones compatible with iOS 12 and newer, including the iPhone 5S.

Last year, WhatsApp also ended support for Android 4.0.3 and iOS 9. After this decision, it continued to work only on phones compatible with iOS 10 and above.

With the development of technology, many new features are being added to WhatsApp and these may require up-to-date operating systems to work smoothly. In this context, the company may have to end its support for old versions. Twitter also ended its application support on the iPhone 6 in the past months.

How does WhatsApp determine the versions it will support?

WhatsApp explains which operating system it will support and stop supporting as follows:

“To determine the operating systems we will stop supporting, each year, as other tech companies do, by the oldest and least number of people We identify the devices and software being used. These devices may also lack the latest security updates or functionality required to run WhatsApp.”
