Microsoft and Finnish energy company Fortum announced that they have started a joint project in Helsinki. As part of the said cooperation, waste heat from the new data center that Microsoft will build will be directed to the central heating system.

Server cooling Fortum’s district heating infrastructure is planned to be used to collect and transfer the clean heat arising from the process. We are talking about 900 kilometers of underground pipes that transfer heat to 250,000 consumers in the cities of Espoo and Kauniainen and in the Kirkkonummi region as part of the Helsinki agglomeration.
400,000 tons of harmful emissions will be saved
Fortum’s president and CEO Markus Rauramo, thanks to the project, will reduce harmful emissions to the environment annually. He said it would be possible to reduce about 400,000 tons. Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin described the project as a “win-win” deal.
