Microsoft ended free support for the Windows 7 operating system in 2020, but it still continues to offer extended support to organizations and businesses for a fee. Microsoft’s plan was to limit extended support to three years, but that seems to have changed.
According to the source, July security patches KB5015861 and KB5015862 contain the necessary licenses and keys to extend extended support. So support will no longer end in 2023, but in January 2026.
The following versions will receive updates as part of the extended support program:
- Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise
- Windows 7 SP1 Pro
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Windows Embedded Standard 7
- Windows Embedded POS Ready 7
