It seems that Microsoft is not done with HoloLens. According to the statement, the software giant will once again test HoloLens-based combat glasses with the US army. It is reported that the negative effects as well as the performance of the renewed and improved HoloLens glasses have been overlooked.

New HoloLens are being delivered to the USA

Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality glasses have been tested by the US military for a long time. While the examples provided to the military are called IVAS (Integrated Visual Augmentation System), these devices work as augmented reality glasses that provide soldiers with a wide variety of new capabilities. He states that comfort has been increased in the IVAS 1.2 updated models that Microsoft will deliver to the military before the end of this month. The new products will now be thinner, lighter and more balanced. At the same time, it is aimed to reduce factors such as nausea caused by long-term use.

HoloLens could turn the tide of war

The US military said in a statement that the two units will test 20 prototype IVAS glasses by the end of August. These tests will measure the glasses’ low-light functionality, reliability and whether they make soldiers sick. Some test takers complained of nausea, headaches and eyestrain last year, while others complained of the volume of the goggles, narrow field of view, and screen glare that could betray a soldier’s presence at night. Core features had also failed relatively often in previous tests.

HoloLens technology is intended to increase battlefield awareness. Infantrymen can see each other’s positions, get vital health stats, and use the less conspicuous night vision. At the same time, a better coordination of attacks or operations can be achieved.

It could land in the field in a few years

If the test in August is successful, the technology could land in the field in a few years. The US military will sign a contract with Microsoft for a second fieldwork between July and September 2024. Afterwards, it is aimed to conduct an operational war test as soon as April 2025. IVAS devices may be made available for general use in certain areas of the military if the US military’s expectations are met.

On the other hand, the importance of the upcoming tests is quite high. While the US military could spend $21.9 billion over a decade on up to 121,000 IVAS units, the US Congress banned further orders of previous glasses in January after negative reports. Politicians had given Microsoft $40 million to fix problems and upgrade hardware. If the upcoming tests also fail, the US military may cancel the contract. If the contract is cancelled, the already shaky HoloLens program could be trapped in uncertainty.
